UPS Change of Operations – Recap of April 6th Call
Local 162 President Mark Davison and senior Business Agent Ben Vedus hosted another Zoom call on April 6th concerning the change of operations at UPS and the temporary closure of the Swan Island facility in Portland. Additional calls with our UPS membership are being scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at 10AM and Saturday, April 19 at 10AM, and you can register for these calls on our website or by scanning the QR codes posted on the Union bulletin boards.
Mark Davison reported that we are still waiting on information from UPS about how the feeder operations are going to be impacted by this change of operations. Unfortunately this information is still in process as UPS is still determining the final numbers on how much work is being moved to different domiciles. Once we have the information on feeder we will schedule a meeting with our members in the feeder department.
Ben Vedus reported that the plan by UPS to move more than 50% of hub volume in our area to facilities outside our jurisdiction has been reduced to approximately 35%. The more volume that stays in our area will hopefully reduce layoffs. These numbers changed in just the last week.
Ben Vedus reported on the preference sheets that are now circulating amongst the part-time employees. Local 162 Business Agents have started the process of distributing and collecting these forms and will continue to do so in the coming week. The form is titled the “Portland Swan Island Relocation Form 2025” and is attached to this article for download. If you fill this out after downloading it please make sure you turn it into Matt Konz, Ben Vedus or Elijah Hoffman at Local 162. They are also available to take any questions you may have at (503) 257-0162.
Ben Vedus reported on the preference sheets for full-time inside employees. They are in process of being finalized before distribution to the affected members. Hopefully we will have those ready this coming week. Stay tuned.
Mark Davison reported that the Alderwood to Vancouver change of operations moving routes temporarily to Vancouver is now underway. We have met with the affected drivers in Alderwood and the change will occur on April 21st.

The documents with route numbers, dates of the moves and facilities are attached to this article. On April 21st five routes are moving from the Alderwood Center to the Cascade Center in Tualatin. On April 28th eight routes are moving from the Skyline Center in Swan Island to the Hillsboro Center. On April 28th seven routes are moving from the Skyline Center in Swan Island to the Bridgeport Center in Tualatin. On April 28th seven routes are moving from the Mt Tabor Center in Swan Island to the Cascade Center in Tualatin. On April 28th twenty routes are moving from the Mt Tabor Center in Swan Island to the Alderwood Center.
Ben Vedus reported that on a May 10th Labor Community Services will be hosting another webinar for folks who may experience a layoff. We will post the link on our website once we receive it.
