Organizing of Safeway.Com Drivers Continues at Local 162
Updated On: Jan 07, 2020

Local 162 Union Representative and Organizer Bobby Rispler reports that the organizing campaign of safeway.com drivers in the Portland and Vancouver area continues.  Safeway.com takes internet grocery orders from Safeway and Albertsons customers and then has the groceries delivered to your home or office by safeway.com drivers and trucks.   The safeway.com organizing campaign is a joint effort of Teamsters Locals 162 and 58.

Employees at safeway.com came to Local 162 in an effort to improve their wages, hours and working conditions.  Safeway.com drivers in the Seattle/Tacoma area recently organized a Union with Teamsters Locals 174 and 313 and ratified a great first contract.  Rispler is encouraging all Teamsters who come in contact with safeway.com drivers to tout the benefits of Union membership and encourage them to maintain Teamster unity as the organizing campaign continues.

Rispler further reports that Local 162 requested voluntary recognition from management at safeway.com.  While the Union has overwhelming majority support from the safeway.com drivers to form a Union, management at safeway.com refused to recognize the Union.  Rispler has since filed for an election to be conducted under the supervision of the National Labor Relations Board.  We will keep our members and the general public informed as this organizing campaign continues.

Hundreds of warehouse employees and truck drivers work at the Albertsons/Safeway distribution center in Portland and are represented by Teamsters Locals 162 and 305. Thousands of Union members also work in Safeway and Albertsons grocery stores and are represented by the United Food and Commerical Workers Union.  Grocery is a highly unionized industry in our area.  Safeway.com employees are seeking the same respect and right to form a Union just like other Albertsons/Safeway employees enjoy.
